Our Entrepreneurial Journeys: MedTech Startups
L-R: James K. Rappel, Rosemary Tan, Jeffry S. Mann, Nawal Roy
Being passionate and having a firm belief were recurring factors mentioned during Our Entrepreneurial Journeys: MedTech Startups, an event organized by Biotech Connection Singapore (BCS) and sponsored by A*StartCentral and Morgan Lewis Stamford LLP on 30th March 2017. We are honoured to be invited to share our journey as a startup in this session.
Dr Jeffrey Mann, Partner and Life Science IP Attorney at Morgan Lewis Bockius LLP
“Entrepreneurship is not a rational choice but an invested choice, you have to really believe in it even if the world doesn’t,” said Nawal Roy. Nawal highlighted Singapore as an ideal location for software-integrated healthcare startups due to its ecosystem. He also explained that considering things from a macro level can help with the development of a new innovative solution. This is exactly what propelled him to develop Holmusk and GlycoLeap, which is a chronic disease management program.
Dr Tan shared her experiences with obstacles and how it led to the development of a new innovative diagnostic kit for influenza virus strains. VereFlu™ aided in the success of Veredus Laboratories. Dr Tan also stressed the importance of understanding the market and creating a product that the market needs.
Dr Rappel stated that needs-driven innovation was the driving force behind Digital Surgicals. He valued the importance of viewing the products from the customer’s point of view instead of focusing from an entrepreneurial stance. Only by doing so, can a successful product that caters to the need of the market help with the company’s growth.
To close the session, Dr Mann remarked on the difference between the panelist journeys and those from Silicon Valley. He emphasized the importance of planning one’s entrepreneurial journey to gain maximum success in the current environment. Nonetheless, the key insight from the panelist is to have passion and be honest throughout the entrepreneurial journey and not to be afraid to fail.
